I was cooking a pot of clam chowder soup on my stove a few months ago. The directions said to “stir frequently” but, thinking it was not necessary, I left the kitchen for several minutes to take care of other things. When I returned about 4 minutes later I tried to stir the soup, but all of the ingredients were stuck to the bottom of the pot. The soup was ruined and I discovered how important it is to follow the directions!
This morning, during a time of prayer, I felt compelled within my spirit to pray this phrase over and over again: “Lord, Stir Me!” As I said the phrase repeatedly, I was reminded of the soup that I had ruined several months earlier because I did not stir it frequently. You see, God has placed many important ingredients in our lives. As we are “stirred” from within by the Holy Spirit, these ingredients mix together to keep our lives fresh and meaningful. If we let those ingredients settle inside us, we begin to get in a rut, and life loses it’s flavor.
Yes, there are important ingredients inside the believer that need to be stirred regularly. A short list of them is found in Galatians 5…love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, gentleness, faithfulness and self-control. Imagine how bland this world (and our lives) would be if we fail to keep these ingredients stirred up inside of us!
2 Timothy 1:6
Therefore I remind you that you STIR UP the gift of God, which is in you by the laying on of my hands.
